SRINAGAR, Dec 3: Police in Budgam arrested 12 persons and seized several vehicles in November as part of an intensified crackdown on illegal mining and unauthorized transportation of minerals. The action was carried out in close coordination with the Mining Department to curb unlawful extraction activities across the district.
Officials said sustained operations were conducted by teams from various Police Stations and Police Posts under the supervision of senior officers. The raids covered multiple areas including Khansahib, Suranhall Batpora, Beerwah, Narbal, Magam, Hardupanzo, Budgam, Charar-i-Sharief, Waterhail, and Chadoora.
“During these operations, 12 individuals involved in illegal extraction and transportation of minerals were arrested on the spot, and six FIRs were registered,” police stated. A total of 39 vehicles used in the illegal activity were seized, comprising 11 tippers/dumpers, 21 tractors, six JCBs, and one L&T machine.
Authorities confirmed that heavy fines were imposed on the violators, adding that strict enforcement measures will continue to protect natural resources and prevent revenue loss to the government. Police reiterated their commitment to maintaining vigilance and conducting further surprise checks to deter illegal mining in the district.
The crackdown underscores the administration’s resolve to safeguard the environment and ensure compliance with mining regulations in Budgam.
