Colombo, Dec 03: An Indian Army contingent has landed in Sri Lanka as part of Operation Sagar Bandhu to provide humanitarian assistance in the wake of Cyclone Ditwah. The deployment marks a major step in India’s relief mission aimed at supporting families affected by floods, landslides, and widespread infrastructure damage.
Officials said the contingent is a self-contained humanitarian assistance and disaster relief (HADR) unit, equipped with medical teams, engineering support, and essential supplies. The force will work alongside Sri Lankan authorities to restore critical services and deliver aid to communities in need.
The arrival of the Army contingent follows earlier missions by the Indian Air Force and Navy, which have already delivered tonnes of relief material and evacuated survivors from disaster-hit areas. Defence sources noted that the mission reflects India’s Neighbourhood First policy and its commitment to regional solidarity.
Authorities confirmed that the contingent will remain in Sri Lanka until immediate relief operations are stabilised and critical rehabilitation measures are underway. The deployment has been welcomed locally as a timely gesture of friendship and cooperation between the two countries.
