NEW DELHI, Dec 3: Union Panchayati Raj Minister Giriraj Singh announced that 2.18 lakh gram panchayats across the country are now ready to provide high-speed internet connectivity under the BharatNet project. The initiative aims to strengthen digital infrastructure in rural areas and ensure last-mile connectivity for citizens.

Speaking in Parliament, the Minister highlighted that BharatNet is one of the largest rural broadband projects in the world, designed to bridge the digital divide by connecting villages with reliable internet services. He said the rollout will empower panchayats to deliver e-governance, online education, telemedicine, and digital financial services more effectively.

The Minister noted that the government has accelerated implementation of BharatNet through public-private partnerships and direct support to states. He added that the availability of high-speed internet in panchayats will enhance transparency, improve service delivery, and create new opportunities for rural communities.

According to official data, the project has already laid extensive optical fibre networks across the country, with over two lakh panchayats equipped to provide broadband services. The government expects the initiative to play a key role in achieving inclusive growth and digital empowerment in rural India.
