New Delhi: A solid 91-run counter-attacking partnership between skipper Shubman Gill and Nitish Kumar Reddy propelled India to 418/4 at Lunch on Day 2 of the final Test against the West Indies at the Arun Jaitley Stadium on Saturday.
At the break, India stood strong at 418/4 in 110 overs, with Gill unbeaten on 72 and Dhruv Jurel not out on 1.
Resuming the day from Jaiswal (173)* and *Gill (20)**, the hosts faced an early setback when a mix-up between the batters resulted in Jaiswal’s run-out for 175. Following his dismissal, Nitish Kumar Reddy—who did not get to bat in the first Test—was promoted up the order.
Reddy joined Gill to launch a spirited counter-attack, adding brisk runs and steadying India’s innings. Gill reached his half-century in 95 balls, while the team crossed 350 in the 97th over and brought up the 400-run mark in the 105th over.
The partnership ended when Reddy (43 off 54) was dismissed by West Indies vice-captain Jomel Warrican, having added a crucial 91 runs off 103 balls with Gill. Dhruv Jurel then joined Gill as India closed the morning session on 418/4.
For the visitors, Warrican was the standout bowler, claiming 3 wickets for 81 runs in 26 overs, while one dismissal came via a run-out.
Earlier, on Day 1, India opted to bat first after winning the toss. The hosts retained their playing XI from the Ahmedabad Test, while the West Indies made two changes—bringing in Tevim Imlach and Anderson Phillip for Brandon King and Johann Layne.
A magnificent innings from Yashasvi Jaiswal (175) and a solid 87 from Sai Sudharsan had guided India to 318/2 at stumps on Day 1, putting the hosts in a dominant position.
Brief Score: India 418/4 in 110 overs (Yashasvi Jaiswal 175, Shubman Gill 72*, Nitish Kumar Reddy 43; Jomel Warrican 3/81) vs West Indies.
