Maputo: At least three Indian nationals have died, and five others are missing after a launch boat carrying crew members of a tanker capsized during a transfer operation off the coast of Beira port in central Mozambique, the Indian High Commission said on Saturday.
The incident took place on Friday (local time) during what was described as a routine crew transfer to a vessel anchored offshore. The boat, which had 14 Indian nationals on board, overturned under yet-to-be-determined circumstances.
“A launch boat carrying crew members of a tanker, including 14 Indian nationals, capsized during crew transfer operations off Beira port in central Mozambique. Some have been rescued, while others have unfortunately lost their lives or remain missing,” the High Commission said in a statement.
In a series of posts on X, the Indian Mission expressed deep condolences over the loss of lives.
“We convey our heartfelt condolences on the loss of lives, including three Indian nationals, in a boat accident off Beira port. The Mission is in contact with the families of the deceased and extending all possible assistance,” it said.
According to the High Commission, five Indian nationals have been rescued, one of whom is receiving medical treatment at a hospital in Beira.
“A Consular Officer from the Mission is in Beira and has visited the injured survivor currently under medical care. Five other Indian nationals have been rescued,” it said.
Search and rescue operations are underway to locate the remaining five missing Indians. The efforts are being coordinated jointly by local authorities, maritime agencies, and the Indian Mission.
“Boat accident: Search and rescue efforts are ongoing. The Mission is coordinating closely with local authorities regarding the missing five Indians,” the High Commission added.
It further assured that the situation is being closely monitored and that the Mission remains in constant touch with local officials as rescue operations continue.
