4.6 magnitude earthquake jolts Pakistan; tremors follow series of quakes in region
Islamabad [Pakistan]: A 4.6 magnitude earthquake struck Pakistan on Tuesday, the National Center for Seismology (NCS) reported.
According to NCS, the quake occurred at 11:29 AM (IST) at a depth of 170 kilometres.
“EQ of M: 4.6, On: 21/10/2025 11:29:35 IST, Lat: 36.67 N, Long: 72.80 E, Depth: 170 Km, Location: Pakistan,” the NCS stated in a post on X.
This tremor follows a series of recent earthquakes in the region. On Monday, a 4.7 magnitude quake hit Pakistan, while moderate quakes of around 4.0 magnitude were also recorded on Saturday and Sunday.
Earlier on Tuesday morning, neighbouring Afghanistan experienced a 4.3 magnitude earthquake at 7:43 AM (IST) at a depth of 110 kilometres.
“EQ of M: 4.3, On: 21/10/2025 07:43:25 IST, Lat: 36.35 N, Long: 70.86 E, Depth: 110 Km, Location: Afghanistan,” the NCS posted.
Afghanistan, Pakistan, and northern India lie in one of the world’s most seismically active regions, where the Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates converge. This collision zone often triggers moderate to strong earthquakes that are felt across borders.
Pakistan, in particular, is prone to frequent seismic activity due to multiple fault lines running through the country. Provinces such as Balochistan, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and Gilgit-Baltistan lie on the southern edge of the Eurasian plate, while Sindh and Punjab rest on the northwestern edge of the Indian plate, making them vulnerable to tremors.
Balochistan’s proximity to the Arabian-Eurasian plate boundary further increases its earthquake risk, while even relatively stable regions like Punjab and Sindh remain susceptible due to their geological positioning.
