Srinagar: The Union Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has granted in-principle approval for the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) to raise 20 new battalions—comprising over 20,000 personnel—for deployment in Jammu and Kashmir, according to reports.

Originally, the CRPF had proposed the formation of 35 battalions, but the MHA has cleared 20 for immediate deployment in the wake of the April 22 Pahalgam militant attack and the subsequent ‘Operation Sindoor’. The proposal has also received clearance from the Finance Ministry, with final approval from the Union Cabinet expected soon.

Sources said the new battalions will be equipped with advanced operational capabilities, specifically designed for J&K’s terrain and evolving security requirements. The shift is part of a broader strategic pivot from Naxal-hit regions toward intensified counter-militancy operations in Jammu and Kashmir.

Additional CRPF companies are also expected to be deployed across the Union Territory in the coming weeks. Senior officials have indicated that a major security overhaul is underway to strengthen cooperation with local police in maintaining law and order and carrying out anti-militancy operations.
