TOKYO: Japan’s weather agency on Wednesday issued a warning for heavy rainfall expected to impact eastern and western parts of the country, particularly along the Pacific coast, through Thursday.
According to the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA), warm and moist air flowing along the edge of a high-pressure system surrounding the country is creating extremely unstable atmospheric conditions in Pacific-facing areas.
Rain clouds have already started forming over regions including Tokai, Kinki, and Kanto-Koshin. The agency has urged residents to remain vigilant for potential landslides and flooding in low-lying zones.
The JMA added that the high-pressure system is expected to expand westward through Thursday, drawing more moist air into eastern and western Japan and triggering localized downpours.
Forecasts for the 24-hour period through Thursday noon predict up to 250 millimeters of rain in Shizuoka Prefecture, 200 millimeters in other areas of Tokai, 180 millimeters in the Kanto-Koshin region, and up to 120 millimeters in Shikoku.
