NEW DELHI: India on Thursday said it is actively engaged with local authorities in Yemen and in contact with friendly nations to find a resolution in the case of Nimisha Priya, an Indian nurse facing the death penalty.

Priya’s execution, initially set for July 16, has been deferred.

The nurse, a native of Kollengode in Kerala’s Palakkad district, was convicted of murdering a Yemeni national in July 2017.

“This is a sensitive case, and the Government of India is providing all possible support,” said External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal during a press briefing.

“We have extended legal assistance, appointed a lawyer for the family, ensured regular consular access, and maintained continuous communication with both local authorities and Priya’s family,” he added.

Jaiswal also noted that in recent days, the government had made significant efforts to help the family negotiate a mutually acceptable solution with the victim’s side.

“We remain closely engaged in the matter and will continue offering all necessary support. Discussions are also ongoing with a few friendly governments,” he said.
