MEXICO CITY: Authorities in Guanajuato, a central Mexican state, have uncovered 32 bodies buried in clandestine graves on a property in the municipality of Irapuato. Nearly half of the victims have been identified, according to the state prosecutor’s office, which shared the update on X on Monday.

The graves were discovered in the La Calera community, located on the northern side of Irapuato, approximately 320 kilometers northwest of Mexico City. Forensic teams have been working at the site since July 30, and efforts are ongoing to identify the remaining victims.

This grim discovery follows a mass shooting in Irapuato less than two months ago, where 12 people were killed during a street party.

Guanajuato continues to struggle with rampant violence, largely due to clashes between the powerful Jalisco New Generation Cartel and the local Santa Rosa de Lima criminal group. From January to July alone, the state recorded over 1,500 homicides.

Clandestine graves are a common tactic used by organized crime groups to conceal victims. Mexico’s official count of missing persons currently stands at nearly 132,000.
