ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan Army has dismissed as “baseless” the rumours suggesting that Army Chief General Asim Munir intends to become the next president of Pakistan.
The clarification follows a wave of speculation and disinformation circulating on social media in recent weeks, alleging that General Munir plans to replace President Asif Ali Zardari.
In an interview with The Economist, military spokesperson Lt Gen Ahmed Sharif Chaudhry firmly denied the claims, stating that the army chief has no interest in the presidency and that no such proposal is under discussion. The remarks were also shared by state-run PTV on social media on Wednesday.
“Speculation about Field Marshal Asim Munir becoming the president of Pakistan is entirely unfounded,” Chaudhry said.
Earlier, on July 10, Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi had also rejected the rumours of President Zardari’s possible removal, calling it a “malicious campaign.” He emphasized that President Zardari enjoys a “strong and respectful relationship” with the military leadership.
Naqvi further noted that General Munir’s sole focus remains on strengthening and stabilizing the country—“and nothing else.”
