New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday said the Ujjwala scheme has significantly improved the lives of poor women, adding that the government’s decision to continue the LPG subsidy will benefit over 10 crore families.
The Union Cabinet has approved a ₹12,000 crore subsidy under the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY) for 2025–26, covering 10.33 crore households.
Launched in May 2016, PMUY aims to provide free LPG connections to adult women from economically weaker sections. As of July 1, there are 10.33 crore PMUY beneficiaries across the country.
Calling it a “big decision in the interest of beneficiary families,” Modi posted on X to reaffirm the government’s commitment to their welfare.
In another post, the Prime Minister welcomed the Cabinet’s nod for the Multidisciplinary Education and Research Improvement in Technical Education (MERITE) scheme. The initiative will be implemented in 275 technical institutions, including 175 engineering colleges and 100 polytechnics.
“Research, innovation, and skilling will receive a major boost through this initiative,” Modi said.
