Mumbai: IPS officer Rashmi Karandikar failed to disclose receiving Rs 2.64 crore in her bank account from her estranged husband, Purushottam Chavan, who is accused in Income Tax refund and cheating cases, an official from the Mumbai Police Economic Offences Wing (EOW) said on Saturday.

The EOW’s investigation uncovered suspicious transactions involving the bank accounts of both Chavan and Karandikar. Further inquiry led the EOW to request details of Karandikar’s annual income declaration for 2017-2018 from the Director General of Police (DGP) office.

“Upon analyzing the documents Karandikar submitted during her asset declaration, the EOW found that Rs 2.64 crore had been transferred to her account by Chavan, which she did not disclose,” the official added.

Karandikar had reportedly invested the same amount in intra-day share trading but incurred losses, he said.

During questioning, Karandikar, who is currently posted as SP/Administration Officer in Civil Defence and Home Guard, stated that her husband managed her bank accounts.

Chavan was arrested by the EOW for allegedly cheating several individuals of about Rs 32 crore. This came months after the Enforcement Directorate booked him for an Income Tax refund fraud involving Rs 263 crore.
