NEW DELHI: Aadhaar face authentication surged more than threefold to reach a record 19.36 crore transactions in July 2025, according to an official statement released on Friday. The system has shown steady month-on-month growth, with a 22% increase recorded in July alone.

The statement noted, “Aadhaar Face Authentication hit an all-time high of 19.36 crore transactions in July 2025, compared to 5.77 crore transactions during the same period last fiscal year.”

However, the technology has faced criticism from the civil rights group Internet Freedom Foundation (IFF), which warned that technical glitches in Aadhaar face authentication could potentially deprive individuals of access to government scheme benefits.

The official release emphasized that the rise in transactions reflects growing adoption and the expanding role of face authentication in delivering services. It highlighted that July also saw the highest number of face authentication transactions in a single day — over 1.22 crore on July 1, 2025 — surpassing the previous record of 1.07 crore set on March 1, 2025.

More than 150 entities, including government ministries, financial institutions, oil companies, and telecom providers, now use face authentication to ensure smooth service delivery.

The statement also mentioned the integration of Aadhaar face authentication with the National Social Assistance Programme (NSAP), enabling eligible beneficiaries to securely and contactlessly receive social security benefits. Since July, 13.66 lakh beneficiaries have authenticated their identities via face recognition.

Additionally, Aadhaar face authentication has been implemented in all 850 medical colleges and institutions under the National Medical Commission (NMC) to track attendance.

“Aadhaar-based authentication serves as an enabler for effective welfare delivery and voluntary access to various services, acting as a catalyst for improving ease of living for millions,” the statement said.

Official data also revealed that 39.56 crore e-KYC transactions were conducted in July.
