DHAKA: Bangladesh’s interim government is taking all necessary measures to ensure the upcoming general elections are conducted in a “free, fair, and peaceful” manner, Home Adviser Lt Gen (Retd) Md Jahangir Alam Chowdhury has said.

The parliamentary polls are scheduled for February next year, with the exact date to be announced by the Election Commission, state-run Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha (BSS) reported.

Speaking after inspecting a polling centre in Keraniganj, Chowdhury stressed that everyone wants a peaceful election. “We’re making every effort to hold the next election in a free, fair, peaceful, and festive atmosphere,” he said, calling for the wholehearted cooperation of law enforcement agencies, without which, he noted, it would be “impossible” to ensure fairness and peace.

On Saturday, Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus chaired a high-level meeting and instructed authorities to ensure “complete security” at all polling centres.

Chief Election Commissioner AMM Nasir Uddin has confirmed that the general elections will be held in the first week of February 2026.
