SRINAGAR: Chief Secretary Atal Dulloo today chaired a high-level meeting with senior officials from the civil administration and police to review preparations for the inaugural Khelo India Water Sports Festival (KIWSF) 2025, scheduled to take place on the iconic Dal Lake from August 21 to 23.

Describing the event as a unique opportunity to showcase Kashmir’s diverse charm on a national stage, the Chief Secretary stressed that the festival should evolve into a grand celebration of local tourism, handicrafts, art, and culture. He directed the Handicrafts & Handloom Department to organize premier exhibitions that highlight the region’s rich craftsmanship for the visitors expected during the event.

Noting that the festival coincides with Srinagar’s peak tourist season, the Chief Secretary said this timing offers an ideal occasion to leave a lasting impression on visiting athletes, officials, and spectators. He urged the Youth Services & Sports Department to ensure a flawless execution, aiming to establish Srinagar as a regular venue for the festival in the future.

During the meeting, the Chief Secretary reviewed the readiness of the venue, sports infrastructure, accommodation and boarding arrangements for athletes, security protocols, as well as branding and publicity plans. He instructed all relevant departments—including Tourism, Power Development Department, Jal Shakti, Traffic, Hospitality & Protocol, Civil Aviation, Airports Authority, LCMA, Handicrafts & Handloom, SDRF, Health, and Fire & Emergency Services—to perform their duties with utmost efficiency.

Commissioner Secretary of Youth Services & Sports, Sarmad Hafeez, informed the gathering that the department aims to establish Srinagar as the “Sports Capital of India” by making the festival an annual fixture. Drawing on the experience of successfully hosting five editions of the Khelo India Winter Games, he assured that robust arrangements are underway to welcome approximately 800 athletes and officials from 28 States and Union Territories competing across five water sports disciplines during the three-day festival.

He elaborated that competitive events will include Kayaking, Canoeing, and Rowing, while Dragon Boat racing, Water Skiing, and a distinctive Shikara Race will be featured as demonstration sports. The festival mascot, the Kashmiri Kingfisher, along with a logo depicting a Shikara against mountainous backdrops, symbolize the harmony of nature, adventure, and Kashmiri heritage.

Secretary of the Sports Council, Nuzhat Gul, shared that coordination committees have been established for various functional areas, each supported by a dedicated State Liaison Officer to ensure smooth communication and facilitation.

She also revealed plans for a grand opening ceremony featuring a drone light show, live traditional folk dances, celebrity performances, and stalls showcasing local street cuisine, arts, culture, and self-help group products.

Organized by the J&K Sports Council in collaboration with the Union Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports and the Sports Authority of India, the festival promises to be a landmark event celebrating Kashmir’s natural beauty, spirit of adventure, and rich cultural heritage.
