Satish Sharma emphasizes youth empowerment and the promotion of sports at the Viksit Bharat Yuva Connect Programme

SRINAGAR: Minister for Food, Civil Supplies & Consumer Affairs, Transport, and Information Technology, Satish Sharma, today emphasized the vital role of youth in driving the nation’s transformation.

Speaking at the Viksit Bharat Yuva Connect Programme held at Sher-i-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences (SKIMS), he addressed students and faculty members. The event was attended by SKIMS Director Dr. Ashraf Ganie, Additional Director Zahoor Ahmad Mir, senior faculty, and students.

Calling the programme a vision for a “Viksit Bharat” — a developed India — Sharma stressed that with India having the largest youth population, it is crucial to address their needs and combat substance abuse.

“Sports, education, technology, and community engagement have gained unprecedented focus nationwide, and we are ensuring this emphasis reaches every part of our Union Territory,” he said. “Sports are more than competition; they foster discipline, unity, and responsibility among our youth.”

The Minister praised SKIMS for promoting sports alongside its healthcare mission and lauded its efforts in the Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyan. “Substance abuse ruins lives and futures. By promoting healthy lifestyles and positive activities, institutions like SKIMS are making a significant impact,” he added.

Addressing the youth directly, Sharma said, “You are not just the future; you are the present. The decisions you make today will shape the India of tomorrow.” He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to support youth through improved infrastructure, skill development, sports facilities, and digital empowerment.

He assured that SKIMS’s request to develop sports infrastructure will be given priority, stating, “Investing in youth is investing in the nation’s future.”

Sharma called for collective efforts to eradicate drug abuse, strengthen communities, and build an India where health, education, and opportunity are accessible to all. “The path to Viksit Bharat depends on the energy, creativity, and determination of our youth. With your passion, we will achieve it,” he concluded.

Director SKIMS highlighted the significant role of youth in various aspects of life during his remarks.

Additionally, Satish Sharma e-inaugurated the lift services at the State Cancer Institute, a Boom Barrier System, and a Bio-Gas plant. He also released the SKIMS Annual Appraisal Report and distributed certificates and trophies to the winners of the SKIMS-organized cricket tournament.
