Srinagar: The search for terrorists hiding in the forest area of Jammu and Kashmir’s Kulgam district has entered its final stages, Inspector General of Police (IGP) Kashmir V K Birdi said on Wednesday — the 13th day of the operation.

The encounter, underway since August 1 in the Akhal forest area, has so far claimed the lives of two Army soldiers and left nine others injured. Two terrorists have also been killed, though their identities and group affiliations remain undisclosed.

“This is the longest anti-terror operation in the Kashmir Valley in recent years,” Birdi noted, adding that further details will be shared in due course.

The IGP was speaking on the sidelines of the full dress rehearsal for the Independence Day celebrations at Bakshi Stadium. He said the rehearsal and security drills were completed successfully.

“The main event will take place in Srinagar, where the VVIP will take the salute. Srinagar Police, along with CAPFs, have made multi-tier arrangements, deployed high-rise spotters, and ensured comprehensive security,” Birdi said.
