Srinagar: PDP president Mehbooba Mufti on Thursday urged the Supreme Court to take suo motu cognisance of the “electoral fraud” allegations raised by Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, emphasizing that protecting the integrity of elections must take priority over all other concerns.

Highlighting the court’s recent decision to form a three-member bench to address the rights of stray dogs, she said the move reflects the nation’s core values—a commitment not only to its citizens but also to voiceless animals sharing public spaces.

“In this context, there is a growing public expectation that the Supreme Court will similarly take suo motu notice of the revelations made by Rahul Gandhi regarding the fundamental right to vote of 140 crore Indians,” she added.

She stressed, “Allegations supported by documentary evidence of widespread irregularities in the electoral process strike at the very heart of our democracy and demand urgent judicial scrutiny. Safeguarding the integrity of elections must come before all other concerns if we are to uphold our democratic identity.”

Last week, Gandhi claimed that over one lakh votes were “stolen” in the Mahadevpura assembly segment of Bengaluru Central Lok Sabha during the 2024 elections, contributing to the defeat of a Congress candidate. The Election Commission has asked him to submit a written declaration regarding his allegations.
