Rezang La War Memorial: Honouring the Heroes of 1962

Rezang La, in the high-altitude Chushul sector of eastern Ladakh, welcomes visitors with a few tent-like structures perched atop a nearby hill. These are the last physical remnants of a legendary battle fought in the bitter winter of 1962, where 114 officers and soldiers of the 13 Kumaon Regiment laid down their lives defending India against invading Chinese forces at over 16,000 feet above sea level.

“These are the very positions where our troops stood against the invaders. Their bodies were recovered from this site the following spring,” said an official from the Jammu and Kashmir Light Infantry (JAK LI), which oversees the war memorial built on a nearby hillock.

The renovated Rezang La War Memorial, inaugurated in November 2021, is part of Bharat Ranbhoomi Darshan, an initiative by the Indian Army and the Ministry of Tourism to promote battlefield tourism in India. The memorial lies close to Rezang La (‘la’ meaning pass in Tibetan), now part of the Line of Actual Control (LAC) between India and China.

At the heart of the memorial is the Ahir Dham, dedicated to the soldiers of Charlie Company who fell in the battle. “All personnel martyred in this company belonged to the Ahir community. This plaque marks the site where they were cremated,” the official explained. Due to the barren terrain and lack of wood, furniture from nearby military establishments was used to complete the pyres, conducted with full military honours.

Further inside stands the memorial of Major Shaitan Singh, the company commander posthumously awarded the Param Vir Chakra, India’s highest military honour. “His body was identified by his tattered shoulder badge and was the only one flown back to his native place for cremation,” the official noted.

Major Singh had commanded his infantry battalion, divided across five platoon posts, with extraordinary courage. Even after being severely wounded, he refused evacuation to save his men’s lives, as mentioned in his Param Vir Chakra citation.

A daily guard of honour is presented at the memorial, typically attended by 100–150 visitors. The site has become a major attraction, inspiring respect and patriotism among all who visit.

Recounting the battle, the official highlighted how, on November 18, 1962, 114 soldiers under Major Singh faced 5,000 Chinese troops in sub-zero temperatures. Every Indian soldier fell, yet their unmatched bravery and patriotism have been etched in history. When their bodies were recovered in February 1963, many were still gripping their weapons, and even a nursing assistant was found with a syringe in hand, demonstrating dedication until the last breath.

The official also recalled a lance naik, a former wrestler, who killed ten enemy soldiers with his bare hands after exhausting his ammunition before succumbing to gunfire—a testament to the courage and indomitable spirit of the company.

The heroism of Charlie Company has been honoured with one Param Vir Chakra, eight Vir Chakras, four Sena Medals, and one Mentioned-in-Dispatches, making it one of the most decorated units in the Indian Army.

With displays of personal belongings, weapons, and ammunition recovered from the high-altitude battlefield, the Rezang La War Memorial stands as a solemn tribute to the ultimate sacrifice made for the nation, compelling every visitor to bow in reverence to the brave men who fought that harsh winter over six decades ago.
