LAHORE: At least one passenger was killed and 25 others injured after several coaches of the Awam Express derailed in Pakistan’s Punjab province on Sunday, officials said.

The train, travelling from Peshawar to Karachi, went off the tracks in Lodhran district, about 400 km from Lahore, Deputy Commissioner Lubna Nazir told reporters.
“Four coaches of the train derailed, leaving one passenger dead and 25 injured. The condition of three passengers remains critical,” she said.

Rescue teams rushed to the scene and shifted the injured to a nearby hospital. Nazir confirmed that the rescue operation had concluded and railway authorities had begun work to restore the track.

This marks the third train derailment in Punjab this month. On Monday, five passengers were injured when two coaches and the engine of the Musa Pak Express derailed at Raiwind while en route from Lahore to Multan. Earlier in August, 30 passengers were injured when 10 coaches of the Islamabad Express derailed shortly after leaving Lahore for Islamabad.
