NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday called on all political parties, including the Opposition, to support the unanimous election of NDA’s vice presidential candidate, C P Radhakrishnan, praising his long-standing record of public service during a meeting of ruling alliance MPs.
Radhakrishnan was felicitated at the gathering by top leaders, including Prime Minister Modi and several BJP allies. He is expected to file his nomination on Wednesday.
Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju told reporters that Modi, in his address, urged various parties—particularly the Opposition—to back Radhakrishnan to ensure a unanimous outcome.
Modi introduced the Maharashtra Governor, a veteran BJP leader from Tamil Nadu, highlighting his extensive public service across various roles. Rijiju added that the 67-year-old Radhakrishnan has led a simple, controversy-free life, and his election as vice president would be a proud moment for the nation.
With the BJP-led NDA holding a comfortable majority in the electoral college, which includes MPs from both the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha, Radhakrishnan’s victory is widely anticipated, even as the opposition INDIA bloc signals plans to field its own candidate, potentially making the election contested.
