Jammu: The body of an eight-year-old girl swept away in flash floods was recovered in Jammu and Kashmir’s Poonch district on Tuesday, while search operations continue for a 20-year-old youth missing in Rajouri, officials said.

Massive rescue efforts involving the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), police, and locals have been underway since Monday to trace the victims swept away in the Suran river and Mubarakhpura nallah.

“Asia Kouser, who was washed away near Umrah Ban Dhok yesterday, was found in the Suran river at Shindra,” an official said.

Search teams are still trying to locate Atif Shah, 20, who was swept away by strong currents while crossing a river in Rajouri’s Mubarakhpura village. Officials said the operation is hampered by continuing flash floods.

Intermittent rains lashed several parts of Jammu region, though no fresh structural damage was reported. A landslide at Niaka Panjgrian in Rajouri blocked two roads, and efforts are on to restore connectivity.

Heavy rainfall on Monday triggered flash floods and landslides across the region, damaging houses, roads, and schools. In the Rajouri-Poonch belt, two people, including the minor girl, were washed away, while three houses collapsed near the Betaar river. Several homes and a school were also damaged in Poonch’s Khanetar area.

The Jammu-Srinagar National Highway, closed on Monday after multiple landslides in Ramban district, has been restored, officials confirmed. The Mughal Road also reopened after a brief closure due to a landslide.
