SRINAGAR: In alignment with the nationwide push to promote sports and physical fitness, Minister for Food, Civil Supplies & Consumer Affairs, IT, Transport, Youth Services and Sports, Satish Sharma, announced a series of programmes to mark National Sports Day on August 29 and Community Fitness Day on August 31 across Jammu & Kashmir.
The announcement came during a virtual meeting convened by Union Minister for Youth Affairs & Sports, Dr. Mansukh Mandaviya, which brought together Sports Ministers from various States and Union Territories to finalize the nationwide framework for the celebrations. The meeting was also attended by Commissioner Secretary, Youth Services and Sports, Sarmad Hafeez; Secretary, J&K Sports Council, Nuzhat Gul; and other senior officials.
Sharma said the week-long activities in Jammu & Kashmir aim to raise awareness about fitness, promote grassroots sports participation, and instill values of discipline, teamwork, and healthy living. Schools, colleges, and community institutions will organize tributes to Major Dhyan Chand, fitness pledges, sports and recreational games, indigenous sports, yoga sessions, cycling events, and community walks during morning assemblies.
“To ensure broad participation, district-specific targets have been set. Special focus will be given to engaging youth and organizing fitness activities for senior citizens under the Fit India Movement,” the Minister added.
He also emphasized strong digital engagement, including social media campaigns, promotional taglines, and fitness assessments through the Fit India Mobile App. All activities and achievements, including medal tallies and photo galleries, will be documented and uploaded to the Fit India portal via institutional logins for transparency.
Reiterating the Government of Jammu & Kashmir’s vision, Sharma said, “National Sports Day is not only a tribute to the legendary Major Dhyan Chand but also an opportunity to strengthen the role of sports and fitness in everyday life. We aim to make this a people’s movement, with every village, youth, and citizen actively participating. Sports and fitness must become a way of life for all.”
The Minister called upon institutions, communities, and citizens across Jammu & Kashmir to actively participate, ensuring the 2025 celebrations of National Sports Day and Community Fitness Day are a resounding success.
