NEW DELHI: Reliance Retail President Ravi Gandhi on Wednesday emphasized the need for regulatory reforms in India’s retail sector, highlighting a shift from store-based licensing to a unified, entity-based licensing system.
Speaking at the ‘MASSMERIZE 2025’ event organised by industry body Ficci, Gandhi said the existing framework—where all laws and licenses are designed around individual stores—is outdated in the context of rapidly expanding organised retail.
“A unified, entity-level license will greatly improve the ease of doing business,” he said, noting that the current model requires separate licenses for each store.
Gandhi also called for a review of inspection practices, pointing out that numerous documentation and pre-license inspections significantly delay store openings. He suggested that moving to post-license inspections would streamline the process and allow new outlets to open faster.
