New Delhi: The Ministry of Road Transport & Highways (MoRTH) has hiked registration renewal fees for motor vehicles older than 20 years, in a bid to discourage their use.
As per a notification, the renewal fee for light motor vehicles (LMVs) above 20 years has been doubled to ₹10,000 from ₹5,000. For motorcycles, the fee has risen from ₹1,000 to ₹2,000, while for three-wheelers and quadricycles, it will now cost ₹5,000 instead of ₹3,500.
For imported vehicles, the hike is steeper: the renewal fee will be ₹20,000 for two- and three-wheelers, and ₹80,000 for vehicles with four or more wheels.
The draft amendment was issued in February and finalised on August 21. Earlier, in October 2021, the ministry had also revised registration and renewal charges for motorcycles, three-wheelers, and cars.
The move comes against the backdrop of a recent Supreme Court order directing authorities not to take coercive action against owners of diesel vehicles older than 10 years and petrol vehicles older than 15 years in Delhi-NCR. The order followed the Delhi government’s plea to assess vehicles based on actual usage rather than their year of manufacture under the end-of-life vehicle policy.
