Kathua: Union Minister Jitendra Singh Visits Cloudburst-Affected Areas, Distributes Relief
Union Minister Dr. Jitendra Singh on Friday visited the cloudburst- and flood-affected areas of Janglote and Ghatti in Kathua district to assess the situation and meet families impacted by the recent natural calamity. During his visit, he also distributed relief materials to affected households.
Speaking to the media, Dr. Singh said, “We have come here to assess the situation and determine the immediate relief measures. The Deputy Commissioner has ensured rations are available at all relief centres, and we have also distributed relief materials on our part.”
Highlighting climate concerns, he added, “Considering climate change, we have launched a National Mission through the Department of Science and Technology to preserve the Himalayan ecosystem. While this initiative will help, societal-level contributions are also crucial. Rainfall can be forecasted, but cloudburst incidents are influenced by local factors, so preventive measures can be taken accordingly.”
Dr. Singh further stated that the government is committed to rehabilitating affected families, with plans underway to provide suitable compensation and support.
Expressing serious concern over the sudden cloudburst and flood-like conditions, he noted, “The government is taking the situation seriously and remains alert to natural disasters in Jammu and Kashmir. People are being informed and advised on precautions.”
Earlier, on Tuesday, Jammu and Kashmir Deputy Chief Minister Surinder Choudhary highlighted that the Union Territory is on high alert for natural calamities, emphasizing that such events are often a consequence of global warming. “The government stands shoulder to shoulder with affected families in this hour of crisis. Every possible measure will be taken to ensure both immediate relief and long-term rehabilitation,” he said.
During his visit, the Deputy Chief Minister also inspected the nearby bridge connecting Ghatti and adjoining villages, which was damaged in the incident, and directed authorities to undertake immediate restoration work.
The cloudburst and flash floods that struck Kathua on August 17 caused significant damage and disruption. In response, Union Home Minister Amit Shah assured that the Central Government is closely monitoring the situation. In a post on X, he wrote: “Spoke with the Lieutenant Governor and Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir regarding the cloudburst in Kathua. Relief and rescue operations are underway, with NDRF teams deployed. The Modi government stands firmly behind our sisters and brothers of J&K.”
