BEIJING: At least 12 workers were killed and four others remain missing after an under-construction railway bridge collapsed over the Yellow River in northwest China’s Qinghai province, state media reported.

Aerial images released by Xinhua showed a massive gap in the bridge’s curved aquamarine arch, with part of the deck bending downward into the river.

According to reports, the collapse occurred around 3 a.m. on Friday when a steel cable snapped during a tensioning operation. Sixteen workers were on the structure at the time. Rescue efforts involving boats, a helicopter, and robots are underway to locate the missing workers.

The bridge, spanning 1.6 kilometres, has its deck positioned 55 metres above the river surface, the China Daily noted.
