New Delhi: The Ministry of Road Transport & Highways (MoRTH) has hiked the registration renewal fee for motor vehicles older than 20 years in a bid to discourage their use.
As per the latest notification, the renewal fee for light motor vehicles (LMVs) more than 20 years old has been doubled from ₹5,000 to ₹10,000. For motorcycles, the fee will rise from ₹1,000 to ₹2,000, while for three-wheelers and quadricycles it will increase from ₹3,500 to ₹5,000.
Imported vehicles will attract much higher charges: ₹20,000 for two- and three-wheelers, and ₹80,000 for four-wheelers and above.
The draft amendment was issued in February and finalised on August 21. Notably, MoRTH had earlier revised registration and renewal charges in October 2021.
The move comes against the backdrop of a Supreme Court order earlier this month, directing authorities not to take coercive action against owners of diesel vehicles over 10 years old and petrol vehicles over 15 years old in Delhi-NCR. The order followed the Delhi government’s plea to assess vehicles based on their actual usage rather than just the year of manufacture while enforcing the end-of-life policy.
