New Delhi: A series of surprise inspections on trains originating from the Jammu Rail Division has led to a sharp 50% decline in ticketless travel, officials said.

The division conducted its second surprise inspection on five trains on Saturday, penalizing 76 passengers for travelling without tickets. A similar exercise on August 16 had fined 166 passengers.

“I believe our initiative is yielding positive results. Passengers are increasingly aware that travelling without a valid ticket will not go unnoticed,” an official said.

This time, authorities inspected the Katra, Jammu, and Kathua rail sections under the supervision of Senior Divisional Commercial Manager Uchit Singhal.

According to an official statement, ticket-checking staff thoroughly examined trains numbered 12445, 12920, 12472, 12238, and 12919 on Saturday, collecting Rs 36,770 in fines from 76 passengers.

“During the August 16 inspection, almost the same trains were checked, and 166 ticketless passengers were fined Rs 1,06,040,” the official added.

“The ticket-checking campaign will continue periodically across the division to discourage travel without valid tickets. We urge all passengers to carry proper tickets or passes while travelling on Indian Railways to avoid fines,” Singhal said.
