WhatsApp calls over satellite aren’t available on any device yet—not even on iPhones—but Google is changing that with the Pixel 10.

The company has confirmed that its new Pixel 10 lineup will be the first to support WhatsApp voice and video calls via satellite. While satellite-based calling and messaging have been seen before, this marks the first time the feature is coming to WhatsApp. The rollout begins on August 28, 2025, with support limited to carriers that provide satellite connectivity, likely starting in the US.

Google shared the news on X, posting a clip of a WhatsApp call made on a Pixel 10 over satellite. In the demo, the usual signal bars or Wi-Fi icon are replaced by a satellite symbol, showing the device is connected through space-based networks.

The announcement also came with a disclaimer:
“Service is limited to participating carriers and additional charges may apply. Only on compatible devices in most outdoor areas where you can see the sky.”

For now, the update only enables WhatsApp calls, not messages, over satellite. Since the feature bypasses mobile networks, users will need to pay for it, with pricing and carrier partnerships expected to be revealed soon.

Importantly, the calls will still carry WhatsApp’s end-to-end encryption, ensuring that even over satellite, no one—including WhatsApp—can listen in.

Apple could also follow suit, with reports suggesting that the upcoming iPhone 17 may include its own version of WhatsApp satellite calling.
