Algiers: Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General Upendra Dwivedi has commenced his official visit to Algeria, aimed at strengthening army-to-army ties and enhancing defence capabilities.
The Indian Embassy in Algeria, in a post on X, noted that the visit began with a welcome dinner hosted by Ambassador Dr. Swati Vijay Kulkarni. The event was attended by Algerian dignitaries, ambassadors, defence attaches, as well as heads of Algerian chambers of commerce, think tanks, and academic institutions.
The embassy highlighted that General Dwivedi’s visit builds on recent high-level exchanges between India and Algeria, reflecting the spirit of South-South cooperation.
Coming shortly after visits by the President of India and the Chief of Defence Staff, the trip underscores the significance both countries attach to strengthening bilateral relations, the statement added.
The visit aims to reinforce defence and security engagement between India and Algeria, with a focus on bolstering Army-to-Army cooperation, exchanging perspectives on regional and global security challenges, and exploring opportunities for defence industrial collaboration.
During his stay, General Dwivedi will hold high-level meetings with senior Algerian officials, including General Said Chanegriha, Minister Delegate to the Minister of National Defence and Chief of Staff of the People’s National Army; Lieutenant General Mostefa Smaali, Commander of Land Forces; and Ambassador Swati Kulkarni. He will also visit key military institutions such as the School of Command and Major Staff in Tamentfoust and the Cherchell Military Academy, and pay homage at the Martyrs Memorial.
Ahead of the visit, Indian defence industries showcased their capabilities at the Defence Seminar in Algiers from July 30 to August 1, paving the way for collaboration in defence technology and industry.
The COAS’s visit is expected to further deepen the historic ties between India and Algeria, advancing shared security interests, regional stability, and defence cooperation. It will also provide momentum for enhancing bilateral defence partnerships.
