Islamabad: An earthquake measuring 4.3 on the Richter scale shook Pakistan in the early hours of Monday, the National Center for Seismology (NCS) reported.
The tremor struck near the Pakistan-Afghanistan border at 5:39 AM IST (Indian Standard Time), reaching a depth of 25 kilometres.
The NCS posted on X, “EQ of M: 4.3, On: 25/08/2025 05:39:37 IST, Lat: 36.10 N, Long: 71.26 E, Depth: 25 Km, Location: Pakistan.”
No immediate casualties or damage have been reported, and authorities are monitoring the situation for further updates.
Shallow earthquakes, like this one, are generally more hazardous than deeper ones because seismic waves travel a shorter distance to the surface, causing stronger ground shaking and increasing the risk of structural damage and human casualties.
Pakistan is one of the most seismically active countries in the world, with multiple major fault lines running through it. The country lies at the intersection of the Eurasian and Indian tectonic plates, making it particularly prone to earthquakes.
Balochistan, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Gilgit-Baltistan, and the Federally Administered Tribal Areas sit on the southern edge of the Eurasian plate on the Iranian Plateau, while Sindh, Punjab, and Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir lie on the northwestern edge of the Indian plate in South Asia. The collision of these tectonic plates often results in powerful and destructive earthquakes.
