Javed Rana lays foundation stones for Flood Protection Works, Water Supply Scheme in Uri; holds public interaction at Boniyar and Uri
URI: In a major boost to flood mitigation and infrastructure development in North Kashmir’s Uri region, Minister for Jal Shakti, Forest, Ecology, Environment and Tribal Affairs, Javed Ahmed Rana, today laid the foundation stones for Erosion and Flood Protection Works at Boniyar and a comprehensive Water Supply Scheme (WSS) under AMRUT 2.0 in Uri town.
The Erosion and Flood Protection Project, with an outlay of ₹18.57 crore under the Comprehensive Flood Management Programme (CFMP), aims to safeguard vulnerable stretches of the Jhelum River from RD 180 km to 225 km—areas most prone to erosion and flooding. The works include RCC retaining walls and crate protection structures, expected to be completed within eight months, benefiting dozens of villages by protecting lives, property, and agricultural land.

Speaking at the ceremony, Minister Rana said, “These projects reflect Omar Abdullah government’s commitment to proactive flood management and environmental protection. They address immediate threats while strengthening long-term resilience and ecological stability in the region.”
Launching the Uri Water Supply Scheme, estimated at ₹6.71 crore, the Minister termed it a transformative step towards ensuring 100% potable water coverage in Uri town. The scheme includes a 0.55 MGD Rapid Sand Filtration Plant (RSFP) at Uri, a 0.25 MGD RSFP at Lagama, a new reservoir, and augmentation of the distribution network. Designed to supply 135 litres per capita per day, it will meet both present and future requirements, significantly improving public health and service delivery in the region.
The foundation-laying events were attended by MLA Uri, Dr. Sajad Shafi, Chief Engineer PHE Kashmir, Er. Taj Choudhary, and senior officials of the Jal Shakti Department.
Later, Minister Rana held public interaction programmes at Peernia Playground in Boniyar and Officers’ Club Uri, where locals raised concerns over damaged roads, water supply issues, and the need for better educational facilities. Assuring them of swift redressal, he said, “The Omar Abdullah-led government is committed to responsive and accountable governance. Development must reach every doorstep, and grievances will be addressed on priority.”
He urged officials to ensure timely execution of flagship and centrally sponsored schemes, conduct regular field visits, and closely monitor the delivery of public welfare services in far-flung areas. Concluding his visit, the Minister reiterated the government’s resolve to bridge development gaps in remote regions and improve the quality of life through sustained infrastructure investments and service reforms.
