Jammu: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Tuesday arrested a Food Safety official in Jammu and Kashmir’s Rajouri district for allegedly accepting a bribe in exchange for granting exemption from inspections, an official said.

According to a CBI spokesperson, the accused—an Assistant Commissioner with the Drug and Food Control Organization in Rajouri—was caught following a complaint that he had demanded ₹10,000 to avoid collecting samples from the complainant’s shop. In return, he also promised to exempt the establishment from inspections for one year, allowing it to operate without hindrance.

Acting on the complaint, the CBI laid a trap on August 25 and apprehended the officer red-handed while receiving the bribe.

Subsequent searches at his residence led to the recovery of incriminating documents, including property papers worth over ₹1.5 crore. The seized documents are under scrutiny, the spokesperson added.
