Jammu: Train services resumed from Jammu on Wednesday after a day-long suspension caused by heavy rainfall, officials said. Six trains are scheduled to depart for their destinations.
On Tuesday night, Northern Railway had announced the cancellation of 22 trains to and from Jammu and Katra, while 27 others were short-terminated at various stations across the division due to incessant rain.
“Train services have been restored from Jammu. Six trains, which were either cancelled or short-terminated, will now run to their scheduled destinations,” a railway official confirmed.
According to the PRO of Jammu Division, the restored trains include three that were cancelled earlier and three that had been short-terminated. These are Jammu Tawi–Kamakhya Express, Jammu–Sambalpur, Jammu–Ambedkar Nagar, Jammu–Varanasi, Jammu–Bandra, and Jammu–Chhapra.
On Tuesday alone, Northern Railway cancelled 18 trains to and from Katra, Udhampur, and Jammu. Later, the PRO confirmed the figure rose to 22 cancellations, in addition to 27 short-terminated services.
The Jammu region has been experiencing its heaviest rainfall in decades since Monday night, resulting in floods, landslides, damaged bridges and roads, and inundation of residential and agricultural areas. Many residents were forced to shift to safer places. Jammu city recorded over 380 mm of rainfall in less than 38 hours.
Of the 22 cancelled trains, nine originated from Katra — the base camp of the Vaishno Devi shrine — and one from Jammu, while the rest were inbound services to Katra, Jammu, and Udhampur. However, officials said rail traffic on the Katra–Srinagar stretch remained unaffected.
