Srinagar: The water level of the Jhelum River at Ram Munshi Bagh in Srinagar has begun to recede after remaining above the danger mark through the night, officials from the Irrigation and Flood Control Department said.
According to real-time data, the river stood at 21.03 feet at 1:09 AM but had dropped to 20.53 feet by 7:09 AM, falling below the danger level. Authorities, however, said close monitoring will continue, particularly in flood-prone areas.
Field teams have been deployed across the Valley to track fluctuations, with hourly surveillance maintained at critical points to detect any potential threats.
Divisional Commissioner Kashmir Anshul Garg said government agencies remain on high alert, with field officers coordinating closely to ensure swift action if needed. He added that emergency response systems and evacuation plans are in place.
Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, in a high-level review meeting early Thursday, assessed the situation with senior officials. He directed the administration to ensure uninterrupted supply of essentials like food and medicines, and to keep temporary shelters ready for affected families.
Authorities have urged residents of low-lying areas to remain vigilant and follow advisories from the local administration. Official updates on the river’s status will continue to be issued as the situation develops.
No major breaches or displacements have been reported so far, though officials said precautionary measures will remain until the risk is fully over.
