Railway Board Chairman Satish Kumar’s Tenure Extended by One Year

NEW DELHI: Railway Board Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Satish Kumar has been granted a one-year extension in his tenure, which was originally set to end on August 31, 2025.

According to a government order dated August 27, 2025, “The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet has approved the extension in tenure of Satish Kumar, Indian Railway Management Service (Retd.), as Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Railway Board, for a further period of one year with effect from September 1, 2025, on re-employment on contract basis, on existing terms and conditions or until further orders, whichever is earlier.”

Kumar was first appointed on September 1, 2024, becoming the first Chairman and CEO from the Scheduled Castes category in the Board’s history.

A 1986-batch officer of the Indian Railway Service of Mechanical Engineers (IRSME), Kumar has over 34 years of service in Indian Railways. He began his career in March 1988 and has since held several key positions across zones, divisions, and production units, including Jhansi Division (Central Railway), Diesel Locomotive Works (Varanasi), North Eastern Railway, Patiala Locomotive Works, Lucknow Division (Northern Railway), Jaipur Division (North Western Railway), and North Central Railway.

One of his notable contributions is the development of the Fog Safe Device, a technology that enhances train safety during foggy conditions.

Before becoming Chairman and CEO, Kumar also served as Member, Traction and Rolling Stock (MTRS), overseeing critical areas of traction and rolling stock in Indian Railways.
