London: Manchester United suffered a dramatic Carabao Cup exit on Wednesday, losing to Grimsby Town on penalties despite a spirited second-half comeback at Blundell Park.
The League Two side stunned the Reds in the first half, with Charles Vernam and Tyrell Warren putting the Mariners 2-0 up. United fought back after the break, with Bryan Mbeumo scoring his first goal for the club and Harry Maguire leveling the score to force a penalty shootout, according to the official Manchester United website.
In the shootout, Matheus Cunha had the chance to clinch the win after Clarke Oduor missed, but Christy Pym denied him. A marathon sudden-death session followed. Fifteen consecutive penalties were converted before Mbeumo’s second attempt struck the crossbar, leaving United stunned in the pouring rain.
Manager Ruben Amorim made sweeping changes for the trip to north-east Lincolnshire, with only three players keeping their starting spots from the draw against Fulham. A sold-out crowd witnessed the first competitive meeting between the sides since 1948, and Grimsby pressed United’s defense energetically from the start.
Cameron Gardner saw a header saved by Andre Onana early on, but Grimsby soon broke the deadlock. Darragh Burns’ curling cross found Vernam unmarked at the far post, and the winger calmly controlled and slotted the ball under Onana. United were briefly relieved when Gardner appeared to score with his arm, but the Mariners quickly doubled their lead. Onana failed to clear Vernam’s cross properly, allowing Warren—formerly of United’s academy—to tap the ball into an empty net.
As the half wore on, United began creating chances. Pym saved speculative efforts from Amad and Benjamin Sesko, while Sesko later saw a more impressive stop deny him a goal. At halftime, Amorim introduced Matthijs de Ligt, Bruno Fernandes, and Mbeumo to revive the team.
In increasingly heavy rain, United relied on young defender Ayden Heaven to prevent further damage, as he blocked a goalbound shot from Burns. Amad and Sesko threatened again, while Heaven headed over from a Mbeumo free-kick. Gardner had a potential third goal disallowed for offside, though replays suggested he was level. Fernandes and De Ligt also came close but were denied by Pym or the stands.
Mbeumo finally reduced the deficit by curling a shot into the bottom corner, setting up a thrilling final 15 minutes. Maguire then equalized with a header at the far post after Pym initially blocked the effort.
In the shootout, Onana appeared poised to be the hero, tipping Oduor’s attempt onto the crossbar. Pym then saved Cunha’s penalty, leading to a sequence of successful spot-kicks. Both goalkeepers even scored before the first takers returned. The deadlock ended when Mbeumo was the unlucky player to miss, sealing Grimsby’s shock victory.
