Rajouri: The Border Roads Organisation (BRO) on Friday launched clearance operations in the Pir Panjal mountain range after heavy rainfall and flash floods triggered landslides, disrupting road connectivity in Rajouri district. Meanwhile, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued weather alerts for several districts of Jammu and Kashmir.

Local resident Ram Krishan welcomed the efforts, saying the ongoing work has brought relief to the people. “The construction is benefiting many. Workers are tirelessly restoring the roads, and we are grateful to the BRO. Despite rains causing frequent landslides, the work is progressing and our problems will soon be resolved,” he said.

According to the IMD, a yellow alert has been issued for Friday in Poonch, Reasi, Rajouri, Kishtwar and Udhampur, warning of thunderstorms and lightning. An orange alert has been sounded for Saturday and Sunday in Poonch, Kishtwar, Jammu, Ramban and Udhampur, predicting heavier rainfall.

On Thursday, the region witnessed widespread disruption due to incessant rains and landslides. Authorities ordered the closure of all government and private schools across Jammu Division until August 30, 2025, to ensure student safety. Institutions were advised to explore online classes for senior students where feasible.

Reviewing the situation, Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah expressed concern over the extensive damage caused by two days of rainfall, noting that the Union Territory had narrowly averted a major crisis.
