PESHAWAR: At least two paramilitary personnel were killed and another injured after gunmen attacked a checkpoint along the Karakoram Highway in Gilgit-Baltistan on Friday, police reported.
The attack took place at a security post near Chilas in Diamer district. The checkpoint had been established in December 2023, shortly after a passenger bus was fired upon in the same area, killing nine and injuring 21.
According to Abdul Hameed, Senior Superintendent of Police in Diamer, unknown assailants opened fire on the checkpoint from a nearby hill early Friday morning, injuring three personnel. Two later died from their injuries, while the third, suffering abdominal wounds, is receiving treatment at a local hospital.
The attackers fled the scene immediately, and no group has claimed responsibility. Police recovered two grenades, 10 spent shells, and counted at least 17 bullet marks at the checkpoint.
Additional police and elite forces have been deployed to bolster security and conduct a search operation. This incident is the latest in a series of attacks along the Karakoram Highway.
