Kathua: Over 200 people have been rescued so far as relief and evacuation efforts continue in flood-hit areas of Jammu division’s Kathua district, police said.
Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Saxena told reporters on Saturday that Jammu and Kashmir DGP Nalin Prabhat was the first senior officer to visit the district after the floods. “He carried out a detailed inspection of border arrangements and held a comprehensive meeting with CAPF, district officials, SSP Traffic, and SSP Pathankot regarding flood relief, rescue, and repair works in Kathua,” Saxena said.
The SSP added, “We have rescued 75 more people, taking the total to over 200 so far. Several families have also been relocated as a precautionary measure.”
According to a police press release, DGP Prabhat visited forward areas of border district Kathua on Saturday to review the security situation in the aftermath of the floods. He also inspected the Lakhanpur–Madhopur bridges, which suffered damage due to flash floods, accompanied by senior officers from Punjab, including the SSP Pathankot and the SP Traffic Punjab.
Meanwhile, the Shree Mata Vaishno Devi Yatra remained suspended for the sixth consecutive day on Sunday due to landslides triggered by incessant rainfall.
Earlier this week, a massive landslide near the Vaishno Devi shrine in Katra’s Reasi district claimed more than 30 lives and left 20 others injured. The tragedy struck around 3 pm on Tuesday near Inderprastha Bhojnalaya at Adhkuwari, midway along the 12-km trek from Katra to the temple.
