New Delhi,: The Congress on Monday launched a sharp attack on the government following Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s talks with Chinese President Xi Jinping, accusing it of “cowardly kowtowing” and capitulating before the “so-called dragon.”
The party also criticised Modi’s silence on the Pakistan-China “jugalbandi” during Operation Sindoor, terming it “anti-national.”
Congress general secretary (communications) Jairam Ramesh said India had long accused China of “double standards” and “double-speak” on terrorism. “Now, Prime Minister Modi tells President Xi that India and China are both victims of terrorism. If this isn’t the elephant bowing before the dragon, then what is it?” he wrote on X.
Ramesh further alleged that Modi avoided raising China’s partnership with Pakistan during Operation Sindoor, despite revelations from top Indian Army officials. “The self-proclaimed 56-inch chested leader now stands exposed. He betrayed the national interest with his clean chit to China on June 19, 2020. And now, August 31, 2025, will also be remembered as a day of infamy for his cowardly kowtowing in Tianjin,” he said.
On Sunday, Modi and Xi pledged to expand trade and investment to stabilise global commerce, agreeing to strengthen bilateral ties, address terrorism, and work toward a “fair” resolution of the border dispute.
According to the Ministry of External Affairs, both leaders reaffirmed that India and China are “development partners, not rivals,” stressing that differences should not turn into disputes.
Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri said Modi raised cross-border terrorism as a priority issue, urging both countries to support each other against the menace. “He underlined that this affects both India and China, and therefore requires mutual understanding and cooperation,” Misri told reporters. He added that China had shown “understanding and cooperation” in discussions on terrorism at the ongoing SCO Summit.
