Pulwama Youth Sporting Initiatives Get PM Modi’s Recognition

Pulwama: Jammu and Kashmir Sports Council Secretary Nuzhat Gul on Sunday expressed gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi for acknowledging the Union Territory’s efforts to engage youth through national-level sporting events.

Speaking after the Prime Minister’s remarks on the 125th edition of Mann Ki Baat, Gul said, “I want to thank the Prime Minister. Whenever we have made efforts to organise youth programs and national-level events—be it the five editions of Khelo India Winter Sports or the first-ever Khelo India Water Sports Festival in J&K—the PM has taken time to appreciate our efforts.”

Earlier, PM Modi praised J&K for hosting the country’s inaugural Khelo India Water Sports Festival at Dal Lake, Srinagar, and Pulwama’s first-ever day-night cricket match. The events drew hundreds of spectators, turning the venues into vibrant celebrations of sportsmanship and community spirit. For a district once associated with tragic incidents, including the Pulwama terror attack of February 14, 2019, this recognition is especially significant.

Local cricketers welcomed the acknowledgment, describing it as a major morale boost for Pulwama’s youth.

Musaddiq Reyaz, a local player, said, “We are deeply thankful to PM Narendra Modi for highlighting Pulwama’s day-night cricket tournament, organised by the Royal Premier League. Pulwama was once known for terrorism, but today it is becoming an inspiring example for other states. Our youth, once engaged in negative activities, are now focused on sports. Around 50,000 people attended the match—truly a matter of pride.”

Adil Kachroo, another cricketer, added, “This is a landmark moment for Kashmir, especially Pulwama. Organising day-night matches is no small feat. PM Modi mentioned the League, and it truly deserves the recognition. We are all extremely happy.”
