New Delhi: The Congress on Tuesday urged the Centre to release additional funds for flood-affected states in North India and provide a special relief package for Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, Punjab, Uttarakhand, and Haryana.

Party president Mallikarjun Kharge stressed that there should be no politics in times of natural calamities. He noted that over 2.5 lakh people in Punjab are reeling under floods, with several lives lost. “My heartfelt condolences to the affected families. I have spoken to senior Congress leaders in Punjab. The party will extend all possible assistance,” he posted on X.

Kharge said both the Centre and the states must step up relief, rehabilitation, and medical aid. He demanded that the Centre immediately allocate funds and utilise PM CARES to ensure fair compensation for those affected.

Meanwhile, seven people were killed in landslides in Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand. In Punjab, fresh torrential rains disrupted life on Monday, forcing schools and colleges to shut. In Jammu and Kashmir, heavy rainfall in Katra has kept the Vaishno Devi Yatra suspended for the seventh straight day since a landslide on the route claimed 34 lives last week.
