Srinagar: Kashmir Police Chief V.K. Birdi on Tuesday called for a comprehensive safety audit of buildings to ensure preparedness and smooth evacuation in the event of flash floods or cloudbursts, in light of the current adverse weather forecast.

Speaking at a security review meeting at the Police Control Room, Kashmir, Birdi emphasized the need for proactive measures to minimize potential disruptions, particularly ahead of the upcoming Eid Milad-un-Nabi celebrations.

He directed officers to assess building safety, ensure readiness for emergencies such as waterlogging or inundation, and maintain disaster management teams on high alert with sufficient manpower and equipment.

The meeting, attended by all range Deputy Inspectors General (DIGs) and Senior Superintendents of Police (SSPs) of the Kashmir Zone, focused on ensuring smooth and secure congregations and processions across the Valley during the festival.

Birdi stressed heightened vigilance, particularly at major shrines, mosques, and other religious sites expecting large gatherings. Special attention was given to the Dargah Hazratbal and other prominent religious locations where night-long prayers and mass congregations are anticipated.

He instructed officers to strengthen surveillance at sensitive areas, enhance patrolling for effective area dominance, and implement efficient crowd management measures to prevent untoward incidents. The police chief also underscored the importance of proper traffic regulation to ensure the safe and smooth movement of devotees.
