Srinagar: Heavy rainfall across the Kashmir valley has caused a rise in water levels in rivers and streams, prompting the closure of the Srinagar-Jammu National Highway, officials said on Wednesday.
Authorities have also ordered the closure of schools and colleges across the valley for the day, as the weather department has forecast more rain in the next 24 hours.
While the Jhelum River and its tributaries remain well below the danger mark, water levels in various water bodies across south and central Kashmir, including Srinagar, have risen by nearly three feet since the rainfall began on Tuesday, officials noted.
The downpour over the past 24 hours has led to landslides, falling rocks, and waterlogging at multiple points, forcing the shutdown of the Srinagar-Jammu National Highway.
“The Jammu-Srinagar National Highway (NH-44) has been closed to all vehicular traffic due to heavy rainfall, landslides, shooting stones, and waterlogging at several locations,” officials said.
As a precaution, educational institutions across Kashmir will remain closed today. “In view of the adverse weather conditions, schools and colleges across the Kashmir division shall remain closed on September 3, 2025,” they added.
