Red alert issued in J&K, Punjab, Himachal Pradesh, and other states; heavy showers forecasted within the next three hours

Jammu & Kashmir: Red Alert Issued Amid Heavy Rainfall Across Several States

Amid intense rainfall in multiple Indian states, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued red alert warnings for several districts across Jammu & Kashmir, Ladakh, Himachal Pradesh, northern Punjab, northern Haryana, eastern Rajasthan, southwest Uttar Pradesh, northwest and eastern Madhya Pradesh, and Odisha.

The updated nowcast predicts moderate to heavy rain in these regions over the next three hours, raising the risk of flash floods, landslides, and waterlogging.

In Jammu & Kashmir, districts under red alert include Poonch, Mirpur, Rajouri, Reasi, Jammu, Ramban, Udhampur, Samba, Kathua, Doda, and Kishtwar. Punjab’s Kapurthala, Jalandhar, Nawashahr, Rupnagar, Moga, Ludhiana, Barnala, and Sangrur are also under red alert. Himachal Pradesh districts Mandi, Una, Bilaspur, Sirmaur, and Solan, as well as Haryana’s Yamuna Nagar, Ambala, Kurukshetra, Panchkula, and SAS Nagar, are similarly affected.

Between 8:30 am on Tuesday and 5:30 am on Wednesday, Jammu & Kashmir experienced significant rainfall. Reasi recorded the highest rainfall at 203 mm, followed by Katra (193 mm), Batote (157.3 mm), Doda (114 mm), and Baderwah (96.2 mm). Jammu city received 81 mm, while Banihal (95 mm), Ramban (82 mm), Kokernag (68.2 mm), and Pahalgam (55 mm) also reported heavy showers. Additional rainfall was noted in Srinagar (32 mm), Samba (48 mm), Kishtwar (50 mm), Rajouri (57.4 mm), and Qazigund (68 mm).

Fresh data up to 6:45 am on September 3 showed extremely heavy rainfall in Reasi, reaching 230.5 mm.

Outside Jammu & Kashmir, widespread rainfall was reported across several states. From 8:30 pm on Tuesday to 5:30 am on Wednesday, Chhattisgarh recorded heavy rainfall, while parts of Haryana, Uttarakhand, Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Bihar, West Bengal, coastal Odisha, coastal Maharashtra, coastal Karnataka, and the Andaman Islands saw moderate rain.

In light of the severe weather, the Directorate of School Education Jammu announced that all government and private schools across the Jammu Division will remain closed on September 3 to ensure student safety.
