New Delhi: The Indian men’s U23 football team will kick off their AFC U23 Asian Cup Saudi Arabia 2026 Qualifiers campaign against Bahrain on Wednesday at the Suheim bin Hamad Stadium in Doha, according to the All India Football Federation (AIFF).

Led by head coach Naushad Moosa, the Blue Colts are chasing a historic first-ever qualification for the continental tournament, having fallen short in their previous six attempts. Alongside Bahrain, India’s Group H also features hosts Qatar and Brunei Darussalam. Only the group winners and the four best runners-up from 11 groups will secure a spot in the finals, scheduled for January 2026 in Saudi Arabia.

Speaking ahead of the opener, Moosa stressed the importance of respecting every opponent. “We’ve studied Bahrain closely and know Qatar are a very strong side. Our focus is on being prepared mentally and physically,” he said.

India’s build-up included two camps and four challenging friendlies. In June, they faced Tajikistan (2-3) and Kyrgyz Republic (0-0), followed by two closed-door games against Iraq in Malaysia (1-2, 1-3). “All four games were tough, but I was happy with the team’s performance. We’re ready for Bahrain,” Moosa added.

Acknowledging Bahrain’s quality, he said, “They attack and defend with intensity. It will be competitive, but not easy for them either.” Bahrain coach Ali Abdulmajed echoed the respect, calling India “a strong side with quality players” and predicting a 50-50 contest.

The Indian squad arrived in Doha on Saturday and have been acclimatising to the hot, humid conditions with morning training sessions. “The facilities are excellent, and the boys are adapting quickly,” Moosa noted. He also highlighted the developmental value of such tournaments in preparing players for senior-level football.

Team captain and centre-back Bikash Yumnam underlined the importance of the opening clash: “The first match is crucial to build confidence. We’ve been preparing hard, and everyone is giving their 100 per cent. We want to make our mark here.”
