Srinagar: Despite torrential rains, police personnel in Kulgam district have come to the aid of locals affected by floods, rescuing stranded families and setting up a community kitchen for commuters stuck on the Jammu-Srinagar national highway.

According to a police spokesperson, 11 families, including a pregnant woman and children, were safely evacuated from the Napora area in a swift rescue operation.

Meanwhile, to support drivers and passengers stranded due to frequent traffic disruptions on the highway, Kulgam police organised a community kitchen at Qazigund. The initiative, spearheaded by SSP Kulgam Sahil Sarangal with the support of the additional SP (highway), SDPO Qazigund and other officers, provided hot meals and drinking water to those in distress.

“The effort not only offered immediate relief but also reaffirmed the force’s commitment to public welfare beyond routine policing,” the spokesperson said, adding that the gesture received widespread appreciation from commuters and locals alike.

The highway has remained shut for much of the past week due to landslides and shooting stones triggered by heavy rainfall. Persistent downpours, especially in South Kashmir, have led to flooding and waterlogging in several districts, including Kulgam.
